Gordana Kotevski Mural

Vibrant Tribute to Gordana Kotevski Unveiled in Cardiff

A moving new mural honouring the life of Gordana Kotevski has been unveiled at Cardiff Shopping Centre, bringing colour, culture and compassion to one of Lake Macquarie’s busiest hubs. The 26-metre artwork was painted by artist Reuben Boughtwood and celebrates the memory of Gordana, a bright and beloved 16-year-old girl who was abducted in 1994 and has never been found.

The mural, which features two radiant portraits of Gordana, and was a deeply collaborative effort. Project producers, The Wall Station, worked closely as with Gordana’s family, Lake Macquarie City Council, local businesses, and community members to ensure every aspect of the design honoured her memory. Based on treasured family photos, this mural reflects Gordana’s vibrant personality, her deep connection to family and her Macedonian heritage, and the love that continues to surround her today.

In 1994, Gordana was just 16 years old when she was abducted in Charlestown - just metres from her aunt’s home. Her case remains unsolved, but her memory lives on.

The project was first launched through a grassroots crowdfunding campaign in 2023, which quickly gained momentum thanks to overwhelming community support. More than $22,000 was raised to fund the mural, with contributions pouring in from across the region. The Wall Station coordinated the campaign, working hand-in-hand with Gordana’s family and supporters to share her story and build momentum behind the vision of a public tribute.

As artist Reuben Boughtwood brought the design to life over several weeks in July 2025, onlookers often stopped to watch, share memories, and thank him for his work. For Reuben, it was more than just a commission - t was a responsibility and a privilege. “Every brushstroke was done with care and intention,” he said. “This mural is about love, remembrance, and hope.”

The mural has already become a meaningful landmark for the Cardiff community and beyond. It offers a place to reflect, remember, and unite around Gordana’s legacy, with many local residents and passers-by expressing how moved they’ve been to see her story honoured in such a public and beautiful way.

This powerful project is a testament to the strength of community-led art and the healing potential of creative expression. As Gordana’s family shared during the unveiling, “We may not have Gordana home, but now the community has given her a home in its heart - through this mural, she lives on.”
